Do You Know What You are Eating?

Monday, November 16th, 2009

By Mary Mucci

We are eating foods containing genetically modified organisms and don’t even know it.

It’s in the soy in our fast food burgers.  It’s in the corn chips we have at our favorite Mexican eatery. It’s in the high fructose corn syrup in our sodas and packaged products.  It’s pretty hard to avoid.

We don’t know what we’re eating because no law forces manufacturers to label GMO foods. And they should.  These “frankenfoods” have never been tested for safety. And environmentally,  critics charge they have not increased yields, but rather have led to the creation of superweeds.

Now, Monsanto wants to release it’s GMO sugar beets into the marketplace.  That would guarantee that all of us will be eating gmo’s ….  You see, table sugar is fifty percent beet sugar .

I hope that doesn’t happen.

I choose to eat organic when I can…and local when that makes more sense.  I was pleased to learn that most of Long Islands farmers are not messing with GMO seeds.  That’s great news.

It’s also great news that some of the natural food producers like Haines and Whole Foods Supermarkets have joined forces in an effort to get their products labeled.

They’re working with a certifying agency to check their suppliers and guarantee their products as gmo free.  Just maybe consumers will prefer GMO free and the market for “frankenfoods”  will dry up.

We know most of Europe won’t import our GMO crops…so why are we producing them?

To learn more about supporting labeling, head to the organic consumers association website..or join the local chapter of Citizens for Liberty…They’ve made this one of their target issues this year.

Bad Reactions to Vaccines Are Not Being Reported!

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

By Mary Mucci

To vaccinate or not…that is the question for a lot more parents than ever before.  Too many children have chronic,  heartbreaking  physical and emotional issues.   Raising the question again and again: Is there a link?

Recently I  attended the National  Vaccine Information Center’s four day conference outside Washington.  There were speakers on both sides of this divisive issue.  I suggest you head over to the NVIC.org website  to learn more.

Meanwhile,  the one issue everyone could agree on is that :

Most vaccine reactions are not getting reported…and that single fact skews the science of vaccines. In case you haven’t heard, {and that’s part of the problem}  the Vaccine Adverse  Events  Reporting System is a passive one.  No one gets in trouble if they fail to report a vaccine reaction.

Experts on both sides have said that only between one and ten percent of all reactions get sent to the VAERS . In fact,  even the Centers for Disease Control {CDC}  admits the reporting is low.  By the way you can report a reaction by heading over to the NVIC.org  website.   There you will find a link to VAERS.

According to VAERS:

“Approximately 30,000 VAERS reports are filed annually, with 10–15% classified as serious (causing disability, hospitalization, life-threatening illness or death). Anyone can file a VAERS report, including health care providers, manufacturers, and vaccine recipients or their parents or guardians. The VAERS form requests the following information: the type of vaccine received, the timing of vaccination, the onset of the adverse event, current illnesses or medication, past history of adverse events following vaccination, and demographic information about the recipient. VAERS forms can be completed online, or you can complete a paper form and mail or fax it to VAERS. To request a paper VAERS form to be faxed to you, or if you need assistance in filling it out, call (800) 822-7967.”

Fortunately,  I have seen children recover  from bad vaccine reactions.  I’ve reported on some of these approaches in the past….and will continue to do so in the future.  But none of the treatments are covered by insurance.

Should you drink alkaline water?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

By Mary Mucci

At every health expo there is at least one water system that purports to make drinking water more easily absorbed and more alkaline.  But the only evidence I’ve heard about the value of alkaline water  is that some of the longest lived people on earth are from Equador where they drink from a mountain stream that has a ph of  over 8…about the same as the ocean.  Now that makes sense because we evolved from ocean creatures…

There are other stories of course…available from promotional materials.  But for me the best promoter was Dr. Jonathan Dashiff  of Linchitz Medical Wellness. Dr. Dashiff says that drinking alkaline water will make us more resistant to not just viruses like the flu but also chronic disease.   He also said that it will not interfere with the digestive acids produced by our stomach when we eat meat.  What it will do is to supply the alkalinity we need to maintain a healthy blood ph…without stealing minerals from our bones.  But  Dashiff cautioned that if you eat a fair amount of junk…all the alkaline water in the world won’t make a difference.  Despite that I know that drinking alkaline water that is readily absorbed  helps  people relieve their bowels more easily and more often.  Now even if that were the only benefit…that’s a very good thing.

Problem is all the systems are expensive… The argument always goes if you stop buying water in a bottle , you can afford one of the machines…that sell for between fifteen hundred and four thousand dollars.  Well, there’s no doubt that bottled water turned out to be a bad idea.  By now we all know that Bisphenol A in the plastic is a hormone disruptor. But those price tags are still shockingly high.

You don’t have to buy an alkaline system if you live near Huntington.  There are two stores which will sell you the water for two dollars a gallon.  One is on Jericho turnpike near  110 and the other,  “the Wellness Water Store,” is in Huntington town…just south of Main street adjacent to the Sobel vacuums.

Unfortunately, putting trace mineral drops in the water did not boost the ph.   I was very surprised to see that.  Your only other option is to eat more alkalizing foods (you know, green leafy veggies) and to stay clear of really acidic beverages like soda and beer and coffee and really acidic foods like beef, chicken, and French fries.

Depressed: Get Your Thyroid Checked Again!

Monday, October 19th, 2009

By Mary Mucci

Most people are embarrassed to discuss so called “mental illness”.   So, for that reason  I applaud Jerusha for being smart enough to know that illness is neither mental nor physical.  It is mental , physical and spiritual.    Her depression was caused in part by her low thyroid.  Her physician, Dr. Susan Groh, says she was also deficient in the B vitamins as well as vitamin D3. And she had a hormone imbalance.  That’s the whole point:  nothing that appears to happen to one part of your body exists in isolation from the rest of you

I suffered with depression all though my teens and twenties.  Then my OBGYN suggested I take B complex.  The cloud lifted and I have never seen the world in quite the same way.

Last year,  Dr. Cecilia Yee “cured” my chocolate allergy, and I was relieved of everything that could dampen my mood. You see, my “allergy” had only one symptom: depression.  There was no skin rash or runny nose.  Surprisingly,  food allergies can become “brain allergies.”  Dr. Rudolf Ballentine, a pioneer of so called “mind/body “ medicine, told me that during an interview fifteen years ago…

There is also a spiritual aspect to every illness…. depression is anger turned inwards…so the cure can be as simple as forgiving yourself and others….so that you can release your anger.

But this story is really about how often people who have low thyroid go undiagnosed.  For ten years Jerusha was told there was nothing wrong with her thyroid…even though she suffered from terrible fatigue as well as depression.  That’s because her TSH levels were normal.  But TSH is only one measure of a healthy thyroid.  It took her a long time to find a doctor willing to look further.

I hope you won’t have to look so long and so hard for good help.

Survey of Natural Health Experts on Swine Flu Vaccine

Friday, October 9th, 2009

By Mary Mucci

The nurses of NY are not alone in their objection to forced vaccination.  No other medical intervention which has the potential to cause harm is ever given without “informed consent.”  This is a human right. But this is more than just a civil rights issue,….

It’s makes no sense to shoot yourself up with a good dose of mercury {still in the regular flu vaccine…and probably in the swine flu} and aluminum {hello Alzheimer’s }, as well as formaldehyde and MSG.  Especially when you can avoid the flu by cutting out soda and other forms of sugar, and taking vitamin D3 everyday–doses recommended by physicians below are between 1,000 and 5,000 IU per day.  I take 2,500.  I do something else when I feel a cold coming on:  I take three or four dropper fulls of Zand Insure, which is an echinacea goldenseal herbal formula {I don’t invest in the company}; I take a level teaspoon of baking soda in water to alkalize myself…and I get to bed early.

So I wondered: Do other people feel as passionately as I do about this issue? It’s safe to say the answer is YES!!!

News 12 SURVEY: SWINE FLU VACCINE: 40+ Natural Health Experts: ******************************************************************

Dr. Rick Linchitz,  Internal  Integrative Medicine ,  Glen Cove

I don’t recommend it nor will I get it.  Firstly, the illness seems very mild by all accounts (at least in the US).  It is probable that between one and two million have been exposed already, so the mortality rate is EXTREMELY low.  Also, that 1-2 million are immune, but nobody is doing mass testing to see if the vaccine is even necessary (obviously unnecessary if already immune).  There has been precious little safety testing and even that has been without the adjuvants (thimerisol, aluminum, formaldehyde and probably squalene which WILL be present in the actual mass vaccinations). In 1976, there were hundreds of cases of Guillain Barre (ascending paralytic disease) in the people vaccinated for what turned out to be a mild illness.  Now there have been laws passed immunizing the vaccine manufacturers from product liability lawsuits…how’s that for an immunization program!

I believe that much better protection is afforded by a healthy, whole food, low glycemic diet, moderate regular exercise and being sure vitamin D levels are kept in the high normal range (50-80 for the vit D 25-OH levels).  Also, immune stimulants such as echinacea, andrographus, lomatium and others and even homeopathics such as occilococcinum have been shown to have benefit.  Handwashing and simple common sense avoidance of infected individuals is also helpful (for healthcare workers, masks and gloves).  In severe cases, vitamin C intravenously in massive doses can be lifesaving.

******************************************************************

Llynn Newman, MS, CN NYS Lic. certified nutritionist/herbalist, Glen Head

I absolutely would not take the Swine Flu vaccine.  I also do not take regular flu vaccines as well.  As a health practitioner, I eat very well and walk the talk and take care of my health including a number of herbs and supplements.  A lot of the nutrients I incorporate on a daily basis have natural antibacterial and anti-viral benefits.

A number of the foods and nutrients that I incorporate that have anti-viral support are oregano, olive leaf, elderberry, and garlic.  Just to name a few.  Elderberry can be used long term in an extract form, alcohol free added to your morning water on a preventative level averaging a teaspoon to a tablespoon a day.  We can incorporate this on a daily basis once the weather gets cooler or if you’re in concern of contamination and exposure to others that are not well.  I also am incorporating an easy home-made hand gel anyone can make with aloe vera gel in a small container with a squeeze top about 2 ounces size to this adding some essential oil of oregano about 6-8 drops for the anti-viral, anti-bacterial support plus a choice of a fragrant essential oil such as lemon oil, orange oil, or lavender oil.  I would make up a batch of these to give to friends and family and this is a very easy and economical investment that will go a long way.  You can get all these nutrients in your local health food store.

It is very important to eat well and quality foods, staying away from the junk, sugars, caffeine, white flour, smoke, alcohol all these things will hamper the immune system and optimum health.  Also keep good hygiene of course.

Dr. Garry D’Brandt,  Chiropractic, Nutrition, Psychotherapy, Glen Head,

1)  No, I would not take the swine flu vaccine, nor any flu vaccine for that matter.  Each year a new vaccine is promoted to stop the spread of the current year’s flu strain.  There are many reasons why this is an ineffective way to go about stopping the flu.  Firstly, the flu strain that the authorities “think” is going to affect us is often not the flu strain{s) that actually do affect us. Therefore this renders that particular flu vaccine useless for unanticipated flu strains that do arrive.

2) Secondly, the amount of dangerous ingredients in flu vaccines is not widely known.  Most of the attention has gone into thimerosol (mercury) but little attention has been give to the use of the following chemicals:  formaldehyde, aluminum, phenol,triton-x, ethylene glycol, beta propiolatone, Nonoxynol, octoxinol, sodium phosphate. These are all dangerous chemicals, and some of the them can be found in vaginal spermicides, anti-freeze, food preservatives, etc.

3) Thirdly, many people do not realize that death from the flu virus itself is relatively rare. More deaths come from bacterial infections, such as bacterial pneumonia which are complications from the flu than the flu itself.  It might be wiser to strengthen the immune systems of those people who are concerned about getting the flu rather than take a vaccine with this amount of toxic chemicals in them.

*******************************************************************

Luanne Pennisi,  Registered Nurse,  M.S. ,  Natural Health Educator,  Glen Cove

After studying the contents of it, it’s clear that it is dangerous and extremely toxic and NO ONE should get it. The only people that will benefit from it are the pharmaceutical industry’s top people when they rake in the profits.

***************************************************************************************************************************************

Dr. Steve Nenninger NMD, Naturopath & Homeopath Doctor, Port Jefferson

Tom Jefferson, MD, is considered the world’s leading authority on influenza vaccinations. He has authored ten reviews for the Cochrane Collaboration, which is the most respected international center that evaluates medical research. Dr. Jefferson has asserted, “There is no evidence whatsoever that seasonal influenza vaccines have any effect, especially in the elderly and young children No evidence of reduced [number of] cases, deaths, complications.”

Dr. Jefferson further asserts, “What you see every year as the flu is caused by 200 or 300 different agents with a vaccine against two of them. That is simply nonsense.” Further, Dr. Jefferson has also declared, “the H1N1 is not a major threat (this link is to an excellent short interview with him).” Dr. Jefferson has noted that Australia has just completed its winter, and there were only 131 deaths related to flu out of 22 million Australians.

**********************************************************************************************

Lynne Farrow,   Breast Cancer Educator,  BreastCancerChoices.org

Risk: The vaccine is untested, has known toxins and has the small possibility of causing Guillain Barre syndrome. I would rather be well-prepared for non-lethal flu than risk a catastrophe such as Guillain Barre.

Strategy: From a health strategy perspective, if we keep innoculating, we don’t teach our bodies how to be sick and recover. Innoculations prevent the possibility of creating life-long immune responses. Long term, innoculations weaken the organism.

But I will be fortifying my defenses. I feel the most important thing is to get vitamin D levels tested because different people supplementing 5,000 units daily may absorb drastically different D levels. Taking Vitamin D without testing gives people a false sense of security.

***************************************************************************************************************************

Jeanette Breen, Certified Nurse Midwife,  Baldwin

The flu is not a deadly disease – just a viral illness.  The best way to avoid the flu is to keep your immune system strong each day since the flu is just one of many organisms our bodies resist each day.  I do not recommend any vaccines to my patients since they have never been proven to be 100% effective  and the preservatives can be harmful and generally cause an assault on our immune system – that’s the idea, really.  My focus is always on using common sense activities of preventing infection by hand washing and covering your mouth when coughing and taking a little extra vitamin C, A, D, etc. when stressed.

****************************************************************************************************************************

Leonard Fazio,  Biological, Wholistic Dentist, Port Jefferson

As far as Swine Flue Vaccine goes, I will definitely NOT be getting it. Nor will my family.

A good friend of mine, has provided us with a Homeopathic “vaccine” which we have already started taking. The “Influenzium” pellets taken sub-lingually as where we are placing our trust.

Additionally, my Naturopath, Steve Nenninger ( Port Jeff) has a Flu prevention/ treatment remedy coming out next week.  The company is called Nenninger’s Naturals. They make a new remedy every year specific to the strains forcasted.

**************************************************************************************************************************

James Prego, Naturopathic Doctor,  Bayshore

I would not:   The vaccine hasn’t had much testing, it is unknown how virulent this flu will be.  The ingredient squalene is associated with autoimmune diseases such as guillain-barre syndrome.  Other additives such as formaldehyde and aluminum aren’t very good for you either, and the biggest one is that one’s internal terrain has more of an impact on infection than the organism itself.  If my physiology is working as it should, then an infecting organism can’t get a strong foothold and either my body gets rid of it, or the sickness is very short.

******************************************************************

Dr. Matthew Lewis,  Chiropractor,  Digestive Health Specialist,  Commack

I would not take the swine flu, for several reasons, the most important right now is simply that the virulence of this flu according to the CDC is no worse than the typical flu.  So, people will be infected but that does not translate to death.   I have increased my Vitamin D and protease intake.

***************************************************************************************************************************Adam Hakim,  Physical Therapist,  Cranial Sacral Therapist,  Bellmore

I personally would not get the flu shoot.  I do not believe it has been adequately tested and I feel the human body is set up to fight illness.  I will boost my immune system with olive leaf extract, so long as I am healthy.  In the event of need for more the answer lies in herbs and body work for me.

*******************************************************************

Chris Calafano,  Raw Food Chef  “The Best Weigh “ & Educator,  Glen Cove

For over thirty years I have been enlightening my precious clients on 1) the historically & scientifically proven dangers of the flu shot and 2) the historically & scientifically proven uselessness of it. Ever since Salk was given credit for seemingly ending polio (it ended several years before his discovery, and all the rest of the vaccines have similar marketing histories…), people are still trying to live better lives through deceptive chemistry!

The real problem is the lack of understanding of how the human immune system works in the first place. For more info, see my article “The Bigggest Health Myth” on www.thefirstsupper.com, or go to raw-chefs.com and click on the hyperlinks “Articles” or “Myths and more.” *******************************************************************************************************************************.

Dr. Richard Solazzo,  Anti-Aging Medical Doctor,  Smithtown

Don t take swine flu shot! Google swine flu squalene. Most include squalene (made from Human and animal brain tissue!).
If you must get regular flu vaccine, get only the intra nasal form! The Injection form could have mercury (thiomersal) in it! The nasal form is more of a similar way of contacting the virus. Injection is not the normal way of contacting it, causing a different reaction.  Please educate yourself regarding swine flu.

Katherine Bari, “the Health Conscious Chef”  Cold Spring Hills

No to flu vaccines… I think common sense here is let’s clean up our diets and let’s educate ourselves to eat nutrient rich foods.  There’s this group of vegetables called cruciferous  vegetables.  Everybody’s heard of them–they’re anti viral anti ulcer they’re full of vitamin U.  They protect the gut and they also protect the mouth and the nose and the bladder and  spleen against a lot of germs…and they give our bodies the ability to fight off infection naturally, just by including these foods in our diet.  Most restaurants do not include them on their menus, so you have to be very proactive.  Go shopping and learn how to incorporate these foods in your diet (as simple as one serving at every meal as a preventative for flu and infection).

************************************************************************************************************************

DR. SCOTT  BANKS, Banks Wellness, Functional Medicine,  and Chiropractic, Huntington

I would absolutely not subject myself to taking a swine flu vaccine at this point.  It’s not been tested thoroughly.  It’s really been rushed to production.  You cannot have any recourse against the pharmaceutical companies if you do suffer as the result of the vaccination.

I stay well hydrated.  We know that your immune system would drop down right after you eat sugar, so right after you eat sugar (whether it’s refined sugar of high fructose corn syrup) you’re going to lower your immune response, so I would cut those things out of my diet. I would make sure that I’m sleeping.  I would make sure that I eat well: fresh fruits fresh vegetables fish water.   I wouldn’t drink soda.   I would stay away from caffeine as much as possible.

Mushrooms–not the little button mushrooms but the reishi mushrooms, shitake mushrooms maike mushrooms.  I like using purified colloiadial silver.  It’s a very good antiviral antibacterial.  Some very good homeopathics that really work great at building your immune system are, of course, vitamin c and zinc even though they did get some bad press from zican.  Beta glucan is another very powerful immune boosting nutrient.  There’s a whole host of immune boosting nutrients that you can take during the course of the winter to boost your immune response so that you don’t get sick (or if you do get sick, one of my favorites is angiographics).

*****************************************************************************************************************************************

Phil Clemete,  Phil’s Vitamin Shops, Huntington and Syosset

No I would not…  I get good sleep, eat right  stay hydrated, get good quality supplements, exercise…  That’s what I would do everyday–not just this time of year or flu season…

Are you worried about it?  NO!

*****************************************************************************************************************************

Dr. Fred Vagnini, Heart, Diabetes & Weight Loss, Lake Success

Will not take shots… Use Vitamin drips on weekly basis to build immunity, but will give shots to patients who want them.

****************************************************************************************************************************

Nancy Hirsch,  Certified Nutritionist,  Cold Spring Harbor

Are you afraid of the flu. No.  Why not?  Because I optimize my vitamin levels (mostly vitamin D which will pretty much protect you from most things).

I’ve heard they’re using adjuvents like squalene topically. That’s a problem, but I don’t know…  I know it was used during the gulf war and there were a lot of side effects. So, I’m not sure if everything on the up and up, and how do we find out what is being used?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Dr. Mike Gruttadauria, Long Island Specturm Center, DAN Doctor,  Sensory Integration,  Plainview

I’m not a believer in swine flu vaccine. My feeling is that we’re exposed to things all the time and that’s the role of our immune system–to respond to it and to be able to eradicate it before it becomes serious.

If you are proactive with your own health, you shouldn’t necessarily worry about it.

There’s a hugh  consenses at this point that vit D3 levels are very important and it’s always been recommended that 400 IU of Vitamin D3 a day was sufficient and what we found is that 58 million American children right now are vit D3 deficient and most American adults are Vit D3 deficient as well and what we found is that vit D3 is good for the bones. Vit D3 is part vitamin, part pro-hormone, so it actually plays many roles in the body including immune modulation.

In 1976  millions were vaccinated and there was a huge increase in the number of Guillian Barre cases..

**************************************************************************************************************************

Dr Susan Groh, Internal Medicine, Grohwell Healing Center, Merrick

I don’t take the flu shot and I won’t take the swine flu shot. I protect myself in other ways.   I keep my immune function optimal by diet and lifestyle

I think it’s a good treatment for the general population.  The odds are going to be that most people will be helped.

**************************************************************************************************************************

Tish McCrea,  Licensed Acupuncturist and Chinese Herbal Medicine, Huntington

Vit D3 is very important.   I recommend  1,000 to 3000 IU if you’re not getting enough sunshine everyday.

I think people are panicking for no reason.  The people who are dying from swine flu already have some immune-compromised situation going on. The majority of people just have a flu and get better.

I try to tell my patients to do what they normally would do during flu season, which is:  to eat well, get rest, exercise, take their vitamins, and, you know, wash their hands (be conscious of that).

I like vit D3.  It’s been shown to boost the immune system.  Also, like transfer factor, it’s not technically a vitamin, but it’s a protern molecule.  It’s found in colostrun, which is the first mother’s milk.

Would you ever consider taking a flu vaccine. No, I would not;  they never have actually been proven to really work. And they also have additives.  If they don’t have mercury in them they could have aluminum and or formaldehyde–those are just things you shouldn’t be putting in your body.  They can cause neurological problems.

*************************************************************************************

Dr. Rosann Nenninger, Naturopathic Doctor,  Homeopath,  Port Jefferson

I absolutely would not take the swine flu vaccine and the main reason is it hasn’t  been studied enough. The bottom line is the swine flu is quite mild. Compared to the amount of people getting it and the deaths (quite low), so I would not take the swine flu vaccine.

The best protection is our immune system all the things we can do to really protect our immune system.

***************************************************************************************************************************

Dr. Alan Sherr, DAN Doctor, Chiropractor,  East Northport

No, I would not take the swine flu vaccine. For one thing, the safety studies have yet to come out.

It hasn’t been shown to be safe.  The safety studies haven’t been published, and, number two–it hasn’t been shown to work.

***************************************************************************************************************************

Dr. Lawrence Palevsky,  Holistic Pediatrician, Northport

I would not take the swine flu vaccine

I know nothing about the health outcomes of the vaccine.  I know nothing about the safety of the vaccine and have grave concerns about  the safety of the vaccine.

It’s not uncommon for the flu to happen during the winter.  It’s not that there are new viruses during the winter, it’s that we are part of the animal kingdom and as part of the animal kingdom we need to pay attention to the changes in the seasons. Animals hibernate in the winter for a reason– it gets colder, there’s less energy, and there’s less sunshine and less energy reserve as well. And so if we are to stay as healthy as possible during the winter, as it behooves us,  it’s really important to us to get more rest than we would during the summer, to get more sleep than we would in the summer, to exert ourselves less during the winter,  to eat mostly warm foods and to eat less food than we would during the summer, because our energy reserves are less in the winter than they are in the summer (so our bodies are less resilient because of the change in the season).

It also helps if people take vitamin D.  For children I recommend 500 to 1000 IU per day and for adults I recommend 2000 to 5000 IU per day. For people of color, I recommend they take higher doses.  For people of fair skin, I recommend they take the lower doses.   Vitamin C can help.  And pay attention to your body if you’re not feeling well, if you’re stretching your schedule beyond what your body can tolerate, and pay attention and nest in rather than going out into the world.

*************************************************************************************

Frederique Keller DOM, L.Ac., Acupuncturist, President, American Apitherapy Society, Huntington

Would never take vaccine…  Instead, take Green Propolis daily (3-5,000mg.) and a homeopathic constitutional remedy, plus acupuncture, immune system preventative treatments.

************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Dr. Lloyd Reiter,  Homeopath, Middle Island

Vaccine is unnecessary and unsafe…
Recommendations:  Eat less, eat purely, take Influenzinum as preventative, exercise regularly
Avoid excess, take Oscillococcinum at onset of flu, take specifically prescribed homeopathic medicine if flu occurs…
