This Is It

mjI cried. I clapped. I even danced in my seat. Just natural reactions.

Yesterday I saw the Michael Jackson documentary “This Is It.”  I was touched, inspired, and so sad. If you are an MJ fan, I suggest that you see it.

I am a bit jaded when it comes to TV and movies. I know that 100-plus hours of footage could be edited together to show someone in the light the producer wishes.  But in my heart, I feel that this film captured Michael Jackson’s love and spirit. I think and hope that the film was honest and showed the true Jackson that so many love.  You could see how the crew adored him, and he them. You could see that he was a perfectionist.  And you could see that the comeback concert that should have been would have been an amazing production.  I loved how they planned to bring Jackson’s famous songs and videos to life on stage. In the film,  Michael sure could dance and sing.  He stressed that everything was done with love. And he said “god bless you” to members of his crew so much that director Kenny Ortega made a comment that the rehearsal was like the church of rock.  In what appeared to be the final concert rehearsal, MJ had the crew in a huddle and told them to “bring love back into the world.”  Those are the words that keep echoing in my head.

I visited the top 3. I love Bayville in any season. The park is very well done. I always say that it’s like a little slice of Disney World. There are 5 attractions — so there’s a lot to see and do. I was too scared to enter the Bloodworth Haunted Mansion, but my brave intern Daniela said it’s a lot of blood and guts! I was scared watching the footage in the edit room! If you are scared of clowns, you’ll hate Uncle Needle’s Funhouse of Fear! I was scared just looking at the outside! The clown at the door freaked me out– there was no way I was going in! Plus they have scary mazes and even a haunted golf course. I loved the Halloween Parade. It’s new this year. Larger than life monsters dance to “Thriller” through the park. I am also a big fan of their home made ice cream in the ice cream shoppe! Beware of the chainsaw man– he freaked me out! The actors did a great job.
I can’t believe the Herman Manor was created by a Deer Park family! They did such an amazing job. The outside is really cool and they even have a walk through inside (they put an extension on their house for it !) . They worked so hard on this house and they do it to raise money for scholarships for LI students. Go check it out! You’ll get a treat and a good trick or two!
The Gateway Playhouse of Horrors was horrible– in a good way if you like Haunted Houses! I was tricked into going in and so I screamed my head off the entire time. At one point I was crying. I could not wait for it to be over– my heart was racing so I ran through and it took 20 minutes ! It was so, so scary. I was threatening Gateway’s Paul Allan that unless he told me what was around the corner, I wouldn’t air the footage! My brave intern said it was the scariest and most unique Haunted House she has ever been to. They have a ton of pro actors with amazing make-up and costumes. They tell a really good ghost story and then you are stuck in it. I was so freaked out I can’t stop thinking about it! It was just really really creepy. For years I’ve heard stories about real ghosts at Gateway Playhouse — so to think that it may really be haunted makes it so much creepier!
Happy Halloween!

Facing Facebook Fears

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

By Elisa DiStefano

So I did it. I know I am behind the game, but  I finally made a Facebook page.  I conquered my Facebook fear! Facebook traffic is up 200% from last year.  Are you on Facebook? What do you use it for? Business? Fun? Charity?

I figured if I am going to embrace this new social media, I might as well make a Twitter account too. That’s very ambitious for a technology challenged person like me!

I began writing this blog when ironically, I started receiving all weird texts on my phone from contacts that I haven’t heard from in a long time. Apparently, someone hacked into my Twitter and sent out strange direct messages to everyone on my list! I quickly tweeted that it was a mistake, but that’s really bad and embarrassing. Whoever opened “my” message had their account hacked and the same thing happened to them. Ugh.

Besides this minor complication, I have been enjoying both Facebook and Twitter. It’s fun to read what viewers think about topics on Facebook.  I feel much more connected to the community.  I get excited when I see familiar faces pop up! It’s also great because my friends who live in the city and around the world can see what I am working on. It’s fun to share my flip cam videos and behind-the-scenes footage. It’s also a great tool for me to promote some amazing charity events. I still have a lot to learn about Facebook, but I think I am off to an okay start.

I think Twitter is quite entertaining. It amazes me how much “Entertainment News” comes from Twitter.  Hey, even Elizabeth Taylor tweets! I can’t believe the personal info and pics that celebrities post and write.  And I have to laugh that Miley Cyrus deleting her account is big news! Now I just have to get the Twitter lingo down. And hopefully the folks at Twitter will get the virus/hacking problem solved!
